1934 R320 Goudey #61 Lou Gehrig
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,000
Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Do not be fooled by the modest assigned grade! Extremely attractive example of this classic Gehrig card, one of the most popular of all Lou Gehrig cards and all 1930s bubble-gum cards. The 1934 Goudey "Lou Gehrig says..." series features an additional Gehrig portrait on the front, and words by him on the reverse (in the case of this card, an invitation to join Goudey's Knot Hole League of America club and to personally write him with questions about the game, which no doubt kept Christy Walsh or someone at Goudey very busy). The card presents as Ex+ when viewed from the front, with four strong corners, each displaying light wear, a crisp image with bold colors, a flawless surface, and outstanding centering. Downgraded due to glue remnants in the upper right reverse corner. This flaw, along with light toning and spotting in the other corners, suggests the card was carefully preserved in (and ultimately removed from) an album at one time, which no doubt contributes to its outstanding overall appearance. This is a beautiful card: it's easy to see why it is not only one of the great Goudey cards that represent Gehrig in his prime, but also one of the best of all 1930s bubble-gum cards. In this memorable batting pose we actually have the opportunity to see what pitchers who faced Gehrig had to confront. No matter what pitchers threw Lou during the 1934 season, he was likely to belt a long one. A beautiful example of one of Gehrig's most desirable cards which is available for a fraction of the price that a higher-grade example would command, despite sharing most of the same desirable qualities. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $3,000
