Circa 1868 Brandywine BBC CDV
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,440
Extremely rare and striking CDV picturing a team photo of the Brandywine Baseball Club, circa 1868. All baseball team CDVs dating from the 1860s are extremely rare and of great note, especially those featuring identified teams. A different example of this CDV (the only other example we have ever seen) appears as plate 35 in Mark Rucker's groundbreaking work Baseball Cartes - The First Baseball Cards (self-published, Saratoga Springs, New York, 1988). Although no photographer's credit appears on the offered CDV, Rucker identifies the photographer as "A. McCormick, Chester County, Pa." Rucker further notes that "The Brandywine Nine was a member of the National Association of Base Ball Players, the body which first codified the game for inter-state communication and competition." The offered CDV (4.5 x 2.75 inches), which is blank-backed, features an exceptionally sharp image and, aside from a slightly trimmed bottom, remains in Excellent condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,440
