Circa 1928 Jimmie Foxx Signed Original News Photo - Early Example with Extraordinary Provenance!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200

Original news photo capturing Jimmie Foxx as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics, circa 1928, signed by the legendary slugger on the front. Foxx's signature, which has been scripted in blue fountain pen, grades "8/9" and contrasts extremely well against the light background of his uniform. An "Acme Newspictures" credit stamp appears on the reverse, as does the name "Jimmy Foxx" (written in pencil) and two date stamps: "Jul 23 1933" and "Feb 19 1934." Despite the 1930s date stamps, the photo was almost certainly taken in the late 1920s based upon both the design of the credit stamp (used by Acme's New York branch between the years 1925 and 1930) and Foxx's uniform (the cap style shown here was discontinued by the A's following the 1928 season). Foxx only played sparingly with the A's in 1925 and 1926, and did not become a regular until the 1928 season, thereby making this one of the earliest Jimmie Foxx signed photos we have ever seen, let alone offered. In addition, this particular example comes with extraordinary provenance: it has been consigned directly by the granddaughter of Rube Walberg, who was one of the A's top pitchers during the club's 1929-1931 championship dynasty, and has been in the possession of the Walberg family since the day it was signed. (Walberg and Foxx were teammates on the A's from 1925 to 1933, and also played together with the Boston Red Sox in 1936 and 1937.) The photo (4.5 x 6.75 inches), which appears to have been slightly trimmed to its current dimensions, displays a small chip in the upper right corner, and a larger chip in the lower right corner, as well as a few slight creases. In Very Good condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $1,200
