1961 and 1962 Bell Brand Potato Chips Collection (14) with Six Unopened Packs Including Sandy Koufax
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200
Presented is an outstanding original-owner collection of fourteen Bell Brand Potato Chips cards from the 1961 and 1962 sets. While not extremely large in terms of number of cards, this collection is of special note for its inclusion of six original unopened cellophane packs (as-issued), one of which features the key card to the set, Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax. This scarce set featuring Dodgers players was issued regionally only in the Los Angeles area, and captures the team just as they were poised to dominate the National League in the early to mid-1960s. One card was packaged in a thin cellophane wrapper with each bag of Bell Brand Potato Chips. As a result of the product with which they were packaged, grease stains and creases are common with this issue. These are the first unopened cellophane packs that we can recall handling. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1961 Bell Brand (8 cards): #4 Snider (HOF, Ex+), 5 Larker (Ex), 9 Moon (Ex), two 12 Davis (Ex and Vg-Ex+), 16 Demeter (Nr/Mt), 22 Podres (Ex-Mt+), and 51 Sherry (Ex-Mt). 2) 1962 Bell Brand (6 unopened cellophane packs): #6 Fairly (pack is Ex, with slight crimping and staining, card is Ex-Mt), 24 Alston (HOF, tiny tear on left edge of pack, otherwise Ex-Mt, card is Nr/Mt), two 25 Howard (one pack is intact with heavy staining, card is Ex; second pack is ripped on the back, card is Nr/Mt+), 32 Koufax (pack is Nr/Mt, card has a small stain on left border, otherwise Nr/Mt), and 51 Sherry (pack is Ex-Mt, card is Nr/Mt). This is a superb collection of these scarce and desirable regional cards highlighted by six outstanding original unopened cellophane packs, including one featuring the key card of Sandy Koufax. Total: 14 cards (six in cellophane packs). Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,200
