1934 Detroit Tigers Annis Furs Collection (12) Including Three Hall of Famers

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840

Collection of twelve different cards (out of twenty-three in the set) from the 1934 Detroit Tigers Annis Furs team issue. This is an extremely rare and distinctive issue! For many years it was a mystery as to exactly who issued them, but they are now attributed to Annis Furs, thanks to the discovery in recent years of an advertising poster issued by the Newton Annis Furs company that features the same unique images used on the cards and reading "Compliments of Newton Annis Furs" at the bottom. Each card measures approximately 3 by 5 inches and features a sepia-toned image of a member of the Detroit Tigers team along with his name and position. The backs are blank. This collection represents the second-largest grouping of cards from this issue that we are ever aware of being offered at public auction (REA previously offered a collection of nineteen in the Spring 2014 auction). To date, PSA and SGC combined have graded only forty-six examples (of all players) from this set. Their rarity is no doubt related to the fact that the set was a regional issue, issued by a fur company with very few locations (possibly only one). This collection consists of the following: Baker, Cochrane (HOF, Vg), Doljack, Fox, Goslin (HOF, Vg-Ex), Greenberg (HOF, Vg), Hayworth, Hogsett, Owen, Perkins, Rogell, and Schuble. Condition of the non-Hall of Famers is Vg to Vg-Ex overall, with one Fr (Baker). This grouping of cards from this rare regional team issue would make an outstanding addition to any Detroit Tigers or prewar-card collection. The set is even more noteworthy as the images used appear to be unique to the issue. Total: 12 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $840
