Polo Grounds Double-Figural Triple-Seat Section - Freestanding Unit
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $3,300
Original double-figural stadium-seat section, comprised of three seats, originating from the Polo Grounds in New York City. Polo Grounds seats have always been popular with collectors, but those featuring the Giants' intricate interlocking "NY" design on each end of the metal framework are considered the ideal, not to mention scarce. This is the first Polo Grounds three-seat section we have ever offered that features two figural ends and we can only recall having seen a few other examples over the years. The white-stenciled numbers, "1," "2," and "3," appear, respectively, on the backrest of each seat. A small commemorative plaque has been affixed to the backrest of the middle seat. The freestanding unit is completely original, with no restoration. (The majority of Polo Grounds seats in collectors' hands today have sections of replaced wood and are often completely restored.) This is an ideal original model with all of the elements that define this seat as the ultimate of its type. The Polo Grounds will always be revered as one of baseball's grandest old ballparks. The stadium was sacred as the home of the Giants from 1891 to 1957. The New York Mets brought baseball back to the Polo Grounds in 1962 and 1963, but the stadium was torn down in 1964 to make room for housing projects, leaving only memories and a few seats as reminders of one of baseball's longest-lasting old-time ballparks. The unit displays wear commensurate with its age and former outdoor use, including chipping to the green paint (remnants of the initial orange paint can been seen in some areas along the metal framework), minor abrasions and chips to the wood, and small cracks within the wooden slats. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall, and in much finer condition than the few other all-original Polo Grounds three-seat sections we have seen. Dimensions: 63 inches long, 16 inches wide (with the seats open), and 29.5 inches high. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot (which will vary depending upon where it is being shipped). The shipping charge will be billed separately from the auction invoice. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,300
