1897 Cameo Pepsin Gum Pin with Unique "The Chutes" Advertising Back

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540

This 1897 Cameo Pepsin Gum pin of Farmer Vaughn (Cincinnati) is especially notable for the fact that it features a previously unknown advertiser on the reverse. Instead of the commonly found "Cameo Pepsin Gum" advertising, the paper backing on the offered example features text that reads "Compliments of The Chutes S. F." (The Chutes was a popular turn-of-the-century San Francisco amusement-park attraction in which patrons, seated in a wooden gondola, flew down a long water chute at speeds of sixty miles per hour, much like today's "log-flume" ride.) Cameo Pepsin Gum pins, manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag, are among the rarest and most significant of all baseball pinbacks. Not only were they the first baseball pinback set, but they are also one of the few baseball issues of any kind dating from the late 1890s. The offered piece, in addition to its unique advertising reverse, is also an exceptional example in all respects, displaying a crisp image and tremendous contrast. Ex, with a small tear to the paper backing. Diameter: 1.25 inches. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $540
