1889 N172 Old Judge Bob Clark & Mickey Hughes - Superb Double-Player Card!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440

Presented is an extremely rare double-player card featuring Bob Clark and Mickey Hughes (pose #76-6) of the Brooklyn Bridegrooms from the legendary N172 Old Judge set. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, there are twenty-three different cards on which Goodwin & Co. identifies both players by name on the card (as is the case with the offered example). Approximately twenty-seven other cards within the set feature a second player but only list one player on the card. Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC, the offered card presents as Ex-Mt or better, with superb photo contrast and clarity, a flawless surface, and four strong corners. Downgraded due to faint traces of album removal (no paper loss or glue residue) on the blank reverse. This "comes with the territory" when collecting nineteenth-century cards, and many N172 collectors only concern themselves with the photo quality, which in this case is tremendous! We have seen thousands of Old Judges in our time, and this is only the second (and finest) example of this phenomenal two-player card that we can recall handling in the last fifteen years! This a stunning and unusual N172 example that would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced Old Judge collection! Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,440
