1889 N172 Old Judge Clark Griffith (Rookie)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,800

Presented is a tremendous 1889 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Clark Griffith (pose #201-1) with Milwaukee of the Western League. Griffith is among the most difficult to find of all N172 Hall of Famers. All five poses of Griffith feature him with Milwaukee and were issued in 1889. This is Griffith's rookie card. He signed his first pro contract in 1888 with Milwaukee of the Western League, and later jumped to the American Association, pitching for both St. Louis and Boston in 1891 before the league collapsed. Griffith was signed by Cap Anson for his NL Chicago Colts (later Cubs) in 1893. The "Old Fox" earned his nickname with his six-pitch arsenal, including the screwball (which he claimed to have invented). This is an outstanding card! Do not be fooled by the modest SGC assigned grade of POOR 10! The card is downgraded due to evidence of album removal on the blank reverse. This type of flaw practically "comes with the territory" for most Old Judges, and advanced collectors concern themselves more with the image quality when assessing the desirability of a given card. This card has remarkable photo quality, superb clarity (among the strongest we can ever recall seeing on a Griffith), and a flawless surface. A tiny surface wrinkle is present in the upper left corner; the card otherwise presents as Ex-Mt. This is a stunning example of Clark Griffith, one of the scarcest N172 Hall of Famers, that would be a significant addition to any extremely high quality N172 or Hall of Fame collection. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,800
