1911 M131 Baltimore Newsboy Patsy Dougherty
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is a very presentable sample card from the rare M131 Baltimore News "Newsboys" series, featuring Patsy Dougherty of the New York Highlanders. This is the only example of Dougherty ever graded by SGC (at any level); PSA has graded a single POOR example. The 1911 M131 Baltimore News "Newsboys" series is an incredibly rare baseball-card issue. This set is very similar in design to George Close Candy, but with each player image printed against a light blue background on the front, and with the checklist-reverse featuring advertising along the top, which reads, “The Baltimore News Newsboys Series – Prize of $1.00 to First 35 Boys Getting Full Set of the Following." Based on the reverse advertising, this set may have been a special promotion produced for and marketed exclusively to the Baltimore News newsboys. This type of severely limited distribution would certainly account for their extreme rarity. Jefferson Burdick gave this E94-related issue its own catalog number (M131) in the American Card Catalog because it is clearly a distinct issue from E94. Modestly graded due to even rounding of the corners and moderate creasing. The reverse is boldly printed and almost entirely clean, which is especially desirable for a sample card from this extremely rare prewar set. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,440
