1912 H813 Boston Garter Hal Chase
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,100
Presented is an example of New York Highlanders star Hal Chase from the H813 Boston Garter series. The offered example is one of six H813 Boston Garter cards recently discovered within a 1910-era scrapbook. All six cards were cut from the scrapbook (which included other period trade cards, nonsport cards, and advertisements) and are still affixed to a yellow backing. Each card is presented individually in this auction, encapsulated as Authentic by SGC and designated as skinned because the back layer of the cards, which bears the advertising and checklist as outlined above, is missing (the corners of a few of the cards are loosened from the scrapbook paper and close inspection reveals the cards are a little thinner than usual due to being skinned).
The 1912 Boston Garter set is one of the most beautiful card issues ever produced. It is also one of the rarest. In fact, as duly noted in the Standard Catalog, these cards are so rare that if it were not for the checklist which appears on the back of each card, we would not even know what players comprise the set, let alone that there are sixteen cards to the set (each team is represented by one player). This is only the second example of Chase we have ever seen and the first individual card example. (The other example known is one of the four cards on the extraordinary uncut panel of 1912 Boston Garters sold at REA in 2013 for $177,750.) 1912 Boston Garters are unique in that each features a player in the locker room, without pants, in the midst of getting dressed, proudly displaying his Boston-brand garters. In the background are beautiful stadium scenes, featuring ballplayers on the field. On this example, Chase is relaxing in a chair next to his suitcase (with "Hal Chas New York" on the case) and with his New York uniform hanging on the wall. The unparalleled quality of the lithography and the unique concept of the set both contribute to making 1912 Boston Garters one of the most distinctive and noteworthy baseball-card sets ever issued. The offered example of Chase is bright and crisp, with bold colors and a virtually flawless image. Light wrinkling is visible in the lower left corner. Very Good condition (without reference to the skinning). 1912 Boston Garters measure 4 x 8.25 inches. This is a particularly interesting and exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire an extremely attractive sample from the legendary 1912 Boston Garter set at a potentially significant discount to the cost of one without the condition issues of the offered example.
