1977 Tug McGraw Philadelphia Phillies Game-Used Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,300

Philadelphia Phillies road jersey worn by relief pitcher Tug McGraw in 1977. This jersey comes with a unique provenance: it was obtained directly from the Phillies, along with many other player jerseys, in 1977 by our consignor, for resale purposes through his company. The name of our consignor will have special meaning to many of our readers: It is legendary hobby icon Mike Aronstein, one of the great early promoters of the collecting field and founder of TCMA. (Interesting note: the name "TCMA" originally stood for the initials of founders "Tom Collier" and "Mike Aronstein.") This is one of the few jerseys that Mike kept personally, and it has been in his sole possession since that time! The blue-knit jersey, with zipper front, features the club's "P" logo on the left breast. The number "45" appears on the right breast and reverse. The name "McGraw" is lettered on the reverse (upon a blue nameplate) directly above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in maroon-on-white tackle twill. The name "McGraw" is chain-stitched in black upon a blue strip tag in the collar. Located on the left front tail are a "Wilson 42" label and a blue strip tag bearing the jersey size, year, and set number ("42 77 1") chain-stitched in black. The jersey is original as issued, with no alterations, and displays moderate-to-heavy wear throughout. One of the game's most colorful characters, not to mention one of the top relief pitchers of the 1970s, McGraw appeared in forty-five games with the Phillies in 1977. He finished the season with a 7-3 record, 9 saves, and a 2.62 ERA. In 1980 he helped lead Philadelphia to its first ever World Championship. He retired after the 1984 season with 180 lifetime saves and a 3.14 ERA. This is only the second Tug McGraw Phillies jersey we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen an earlier example (McGraw joined the Phillies in 1975). Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $3,300
