1900 M101-1 Sporting News Billy Hamilton
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
M101-1 Sporting News sepia-toned premium of Hall of Fame outfielder Billy Hamilton dating from 1900. The Sporting News premium set was issued between the years 1899 and 1900. The fact that this rare premium issue is designed with a biography on the reverse, a design element that in the years to follow came to be a standard defining feature of many baseball-card sets, makes it all the more substantial. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right. They were intended to be collected over a period of months, as issued, and their purpose was to provide extra value and to encourage loyalty among readers of the Sporting News. Their method of issue and the thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. The Billy Hamilton premium was issued on July 21, 1900, and features the future Hall of Fame legend as a center fielder with the Boston Beaneaters. It is particularly interesting to note that the image on this premium is copyrighted by "E. Chickering, Boston." Chickering was one of the top photographers in Boston at this time, and was particularly noted for his images of Boston ballplayers. The premium (8.75 x 11 inches) displays a few light-to-moderate creases along the top and bottom borders, as well as two extremely light vertical creases on either side of Hamilton's image. Technically in Very Good condition overall, but Excellent in its overall appearance. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $540
