1938 to 1954 Dixie Lid Collection (28)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $360
Outstanding collection of twenty-eight Dixie Lids from three sets spanning the years 1938 to 1954. Dixie Lids are one of the most fascinating of all food issues in that they were designed as tops for the company's line of ice-cream products and featured well-known sports and movie stars on the inside as a further enticement to young consumers. Originally created in the 1930s, the idea was revived in the early 1950s. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1938 (2 lids): Feller (HOF, Hoodsie, small) and Baugh (NFL HOF, Meadow Gold, large). 2) 1953 (10 lids – all large): Carrasquel (no tab,), Fain, Hacker (no tab,), Kiner (HOF, Breyers, no tab), Mueller (no tab), Priddy, Reynolds (no tab), Sauer, Schoendienst (HOF, Golden, no tab), and Shantz (no tab). 3) 1954 (16 lids – all 2-11/16” diameter): Ashburn (HOF, Lemke’s, no tab), two Gordon (Pittsburgh var., one with no tab,), Hoeft, Jensen (no tab,), Kiner (HOF, Chicago var., Lemke’s, no tab), Kluszewski (no tab), two McDougald (one with no tab), Minoso (no tab), O’Connell (no tab), Parnell (no tab), two Roe (one with no tab), Rosen (no tab), and Slaughter (HOF, Lemke’s, no tab). Condition of this collection spans several grades, averaging Vg overall. Nineteen lids are missing the tab, as noted, and thirteen lids have the flavor stamped on the reverse. A number of different brand advertisements are represented throughout this collection. This is a very presentable collection of Dixie Lids, with several highlights. Total: 28 lids. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $360
