1916 M101-5 Sporting News Near-Complete Set (190/200) Including 24 Hall of Famers

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $13,200

Presented is an extremely attractive and overall high-grade near-complete set of 1916 M101-5 Sporting News, missing just ten cards for completion (#26 Carey, 28 Chance, 86 Jackson, 90 Johnson, 114 McGraw, 151 Ruth, 171 Stengel, 176 Thorpe, 184 Wagner, and 187 Walsh, most of which are offered as separate lots in this auction). All 190 cards have been encapsulated and graded by SGC (submitted by REA). The 1916 M101-5 set is one of the most highly regarded and comprehensive baseball-card sets of the era. The set is commonly referred to as issued by the Sporting News, but, as most collectors know, the set was actually issued by several different companies. Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well as with blank banks. All the cards in this set have blanks backs. One of the most important and rarely offered of all prewar baseball-card sets, this near-complete set includes many of the top stars of the day and is loaded with highlights, including twenty-four Hall of Famers (among them Nap Lajoie, Mordecai Brown, and Charles Comiskey), extremely desirable key cards of "Black Sox" players (Eddie Cicotte, Hap Felsch, and Buck Weaver), and many other key and star cards. All cards within this near-complete set are bright, crisp, and clean, with many of the lesser-grade examples presenting as Excellent to Near Mint but displaying tiny surface wrinkles (extremely common to this issue because of the stock on which it is printed) or minor flaws on the blank reverses. This is an extraordinary near-complete set!

The M101-5 Sporting News set is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Very few complete sets exist. This is only the second near-complete set of M101-5 that we have offered in the last twenty years! This near-complete set has been in the possession of our consignor for more than two decades, and it is hard to imagine that a more crisp and clean complete set could be assembled card-by-card today. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades (factoring in the eighty half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $10,060. Total: 190 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000+.
