1958 Hires Root Beer SGC-Graded Collection (17) Including Drysdale and Mazeroski
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080
Collection of seventeen different 1958 Hires Root Beer cards, all with tabs, all graded and encapsulated by SGC. Hires Root Beer cards were designed to be issued one card per six-pack of Hires Root Beer. It must have been nearly impossible for kids to assemble a complete set by buying root beer, but fortunately some factory sets made it into the collecting world. Legendary early card dealer Bruce Yeko is credited as the source for all of the hobby's high-grade Hires sets with tabs, from which many (if not all) of these cards almost certainly originated. Yeko somehow managed to acquire a small quantity of perfect sets directly from Hires in the 1960s. HIs supply of Hires sets was always small, so he charged a then eye-popping $19.95 per set, making the Hires set one of the most expensive offerings in the entire Wholesale Cards Catalog. He ran out in the 1970s. SGC Grading Composite: Three MINT 96: #54 Neal, 64 Grissom, and 65 Baker. Two NM/MT+ 92: #12 Philley and 53 White. Two NM/MT 88: #31 Kline and 36 Mazeroski (HOF). Four NM+ 86: #29 Lopata, 38 Runnels, 39 Sanford, and #42 Podres. Three NM 84: #20 Hamner, 27 Thomas, and 55 Drysdale (HOF). Three EX/NM 80: #13 Newcombe, 35 Jablonski, and 74 Walker. This is a magnificent collection of high-grade cards with tabs, highlighted by Hall of Famers Don Drysdale and Bill Mazeroski, from this popular and very unusual regional issue. Total: 17 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,080
