1964 Original Large-Format Sandy Koufax by Walter Looss - PSA/DNA Type 1 - Signed and Dated by the Photographer!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,800

Original large-format photograph of Sandy Koufax taken by noted sports photographer Walter Iooss in 1964, signed and dated by Iooss on the reverse. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as an "Original Type 1 Walter Iooss Photograph." The photo captures Koufax on the mound just prior to registering the final out of his third career no hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium. Signed on the reverse by the photographer: "Walter Iooss - Koufax - No Hitter against Phila. - 6/64 at Philly." Also written on the reverse along the top border in pencil is the notation "137 Ioos Diamond Dreams." This is one of the most famous of all Sandy Koufax images and one that has been reproduced in countless books and periodicals. While familiar to the eye, it should be noted that vintage Type 1 examples of the photo (signed by the photographer no less) are exceedingly rare. This is the first we have ever handled and we cannot recall having seen any other examples at auction. Iooss, who is one of the most accomplished sports photographers of our era, was associated with Sports Illustrated for nearly fifty years and is known for his prolific work on the magazine's iconic swimsuit issues. During the past half century, nearly every top athlete has been captured through his gifted lens, including Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Cal Ripken Jr., Ken Griffey Jr., and Tiger Woods. In 2004 he was awarded with the LUCIE Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports Photography, and his works have been exhibited at a number of prestigious venues, including Newseum in Washington, D.C. The photo (11 x 14 inches) displays very minor rippling and small areas of surface paper loss and minor creasing at the corners (most likely from its having once been mounted). In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from PSA/DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,800
