1906 Wee Willie Keeler Original Paul Thompson Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,800
Original photo of Hall of Fame outfielder "Wee Willie" Keeler as a member of the New York Highlanders, taken by renowned baseball photographer Paul Thompson. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as an "Original Type 1 Paul Thompson Photograph." This is an extraordinary Keeler photo in that it captures him "in action" as he demonstrates his bunting technique. Highlanders catcher Red Kleinow is partially pictured squatting behind Keeler as he awaits the pitch. Thompson's credit stamp appears on the reverse, as do the names of both Keeler and Kleinow, each written in pencil (Kleinow's name has been crossed out). Although the photo is not dated, it can be pinpointed to the 1906 season because that is the only year in which the Highlanders wore the uniform style pictured here. Keeler photos are rare and this is one of the finest examples we have ever seen dating to his seven-year tenure with the Highlanders (1903-1909), which comes with the added bonus of having been taken by one of the most important sports photographers of the dead-ball era. The photo (4.75 x 6.75 inches) displays a tiny chip in the upper left corner and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from PSA/DNA.
