1911 T3 Turkey Red Partial Set (65/100) with 19 Hall of Famers Including Mathewson, Lajoie, and Speaker
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $9,000
Presented is an outstanding partial set of 1911 T3 Turkey Red cabinets consisting of sixty-five different (out of 100 in a complete set). This assembly is highlighted by nineteen Hall of Famers, including Christy Mathewson, Nap Lajoie, and Tris Speaker. Turkey Red cabinet cards are one of the most highly prized of all tobacco issues. They were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Turkey Red Cigarettes. Because Turkey Reds are large cards that are easily damaged, they are particularly difficult to find in high grade. Turkey Reds have long been recognized as one of the most popular and beautiful of all baseball cards, and are rarely offered as a complete or near-complete set (in this case missing thirty-five). While the condition of this partial set spans several grades, it is overall in modest condition due to a variety of condition flaws, including pinholes, affecting many of the cards. This was a very common fate of T3s, as they were intended to be displayed and were often tacked up to walls for that very purpose. Almost all of the cards present with bold colors and crisp central images, but small flaws cause them to technically grade modestly (for instance, a pinhole relegates a card to Poor/Fair if submitted for professional grading). Seven cards are professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. Ten cards have a Turkey Red advertisement on the backs (noted below), while the balance are checklist (with offer) backs. This partial set consists of the following: #1 Brown (HOF, Pr/Fr), 2, 3, 4 Bresnahan (HOF, Pr), 6 Chase (Gd+), 8 Clarke (HOF, Pr), 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16 Evers (HOF, Pr), 17 Griffith (HOF, Pr), 18 Jennings (HOF, Fr), 19 Joss (HOF, Pr), 20, 21, 22, 23 Lajoie (HOF, Fr/Gd), 25, 26 McGraw (HOF, Pr), 27 Mathewson (HOF, Pr due advanced chipping in the lower left corner, otherwise Vg-Ex), 28a, 29, 34, 35 Tinker (HOF, Pr), 36 Speaker (HOF, Pr), 37, 38 (POOR 1), 39 Waddell (HOF, Pr), 40 Willis (HOF, Pr), 41, 43 (GOOD 2), 44, 46, 47 Chance (HOF, Pr/Fr), 49, 77 (FAIR 1.5), 78 Baker (HOF, Pr, ad back), 79, 81, 83, 85, 86 (ad back), 87 E. Collins (POOR 1, ad back), 88 (ad back), 89 (ad back), 90b, 91 (ad back), 92, 95, 96 (ad back), 97 (GOOD 2 [MK], ad back), 102 (ad back), 104, 106, 109, 111 (ad back), 112a (FAIR 1), 115, 116, 118, 121 (GOOD 2 [MK]), 124 Wallace (HOF, Pr), and 125 Walsh (HOF, Pr). This extremely substantial represents a rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding foundation for the assembly of a complete modest-grade (yet still enormously appealing!) set of this classic issue. Loaded with Hall of Famers, among them key cards such as Mathewson, Lajoie, and Speaker, this lot also possesses tremendous break value. Total: 65 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+.
