1980 Orlando Cepeda Signed Puerto Rican League Coaching Contract
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $180
Four-page fold-over contract, dated October 22, 1980, between Orlando Cepeda and the Santurce Cangrejeros of the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League, signed in blue ink by "Orlando Cepeda" (grading "10"). The stamped name of team president Reinaldo Paniagua-Diez appears above Cepeda's signature. The agreement calls for Cepeda to receive a salary of $1,200 per month, as a coach for the 1980-1981 winter season. Cepeda, who hailed from Puerto Rico, normally returned every off-season to play for Santurce in the Puerto Rican League. As can be seen here, he continued his close relationship with the club as a coach even after his retirement as a player in 1974. Cepeda was one of the top sluggers of his era. In seventeen seasons, spanning the years 1958 through 1974, Cepeda totaled 374 home runs and 1,365 RBI while compiling a .297 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999. Baseball contracts of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is only the second Cepeda contract we have ever offered and we can only recall seeing three other examples (all from the Puerto Rican League) ever appearing at auction. The contract (8.25 x 8.5 inches) displays two notebook holes at the top border and a single horizontal fold. In Excellent to Mint condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $180
