1982-1983 Tommy John Signed New York Yankees Contract - Also Signed Twice by George Steinbrenner
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $480
Six-page fold-over contract, dated February 18, 1982, between Tommy John and the New York Yankees, signed twice in red ink (grading "10") by "Thomas E. John Jr.," and twice in blue ink ("10") by Yankees owner "George M. Steinbrenner." Also signed twice in blue ink ("10") by American League president Lee MacPhail. The reason the contract was signed twice by all three parties is because the Yankees assigned this contract to the California Angels on August 31, 1982, and all three signatures were needed in approval of the transaction. This two-year agreement was for the 1982 and 1983 seasons, during which time John compiled a 25-25 record with both the Yankees and Angels. John's salary for the period is listed as being covered under a separate document titled "Special Covenants," which is not included here. John finished his twenty-six-year career with 288 wins and a 3.34 lifetime ERA. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
