Extraordinary Early 1900s Baseball-Scorer Collection (42)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,700

Absolutely remarkable collection of forty-two different baseball scorers (plus one football scorer), the majority of which date from the early 1900s. This is BY FAR the finest collection of baseball scorers we have ever seen assembled, let alone offered at public auction! It is notable both for its many rarities and for its quality: almost all are in extremely high grade. REA has always had a special interest in baseball scorers of all types (celluloid and cardboard construction, both of which are included here). When we opened the package with this collection sent in for auction, we were floored. We know the extreme rarity of many pieces in the collection. Some we have never even seen before. We naturally asked, "How did they all get together?" The answer: Our consignor spent many years putting this collection together piece by piece, and he did so with an eye for both condition and rarity. We are certain that he was extremely dedicated, as this is simply just not the kind of collection that can be assembled without an incredible amount of time and energy. Included in the collection are fourteen watch-fob scorers and sixteen celluloid varieties. Nearly all of these scorers were issued by merchants as promotional giveaways. As such, most have strong crossover appeal to advertising collectors as well. The scorers come in many sizes and shapes, including those shaped as a baseball, a glove, an automobile, and even one shaped and illustrated in the form of a catcher. Nationally known advertisers include Coca-Cola, Cracker Jack, Chalmers, Hires Root Beer, and Spalding, while local merchants are represented by sporting-goods stores, hardware stores, bakeries, breweries, tailors, and newspapers. Notable among the watch-fob scorers are the classic 1935 Babe Ruth scorer (Braves cap) and a 1939 Baseball Centennial scorer, but the gems that make this collection most special are the extreme rarities such as the Rambler celluliod scorer and the obscure rarities such as The Star Hat cardboard scorer. Condition ranges from Vg to Mint, averaging Ex-Mt, with many representing the finest example of that particular scorer we have seen. This is an amazing group. We would normally say that this group could form the foundation for the assembling of a world-class baseball-scorer collection, but, frankly, this IS a world-class baseball-scorer collection! Of course, one could continue to add to it. That is the nature of scorers. There are always more rarities to find. But this is truly a magnificent collection unto itself. It is naturally hard to do justice to each component of the collection in text. All of the scorers can be viewed on our website. Total: 43 scorers (42 baseball and 1 football). Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,700
