1922 Leader Theatre Pat Shea SGC EX 60
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200
Graded EX 60 by SGC. Extremely rare sample card of New York Giants pitcher Pat Shea from the 1922 Leader Theatre set. Issued by Leader Theatre, a Washington, D.C., movie theater, this set can be found with card fronts paralleling the W573 and W575-1 strip-card sets. The reverse features a bold advertisement for the theater and its weekend showings of Robinson Crusoe, as well as the promise of free cards featuring "Famous Base Ball Stars" and an album to anyone collecting the entire 120-card set. The offered example is the much more desirable W575-1 variety (also resembling the E121 American Caramel series). Cards designed in this style are much more difficult to obtain. This is an exceptionally attractive example, bright and crisp, with outstanding centering and four strong corners. The reverse is boldly printed with a few very light spots of toning, mentioned for the sake of accuracy as they do not detract at all from the superb display value. An extraordinarily rare sample worthy of even the most advanced type-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,200
