1958 to 1960 Los Angeles Dodgers Large-Format Player Stadium Pins Collection (11)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $600

Presented is an outstanding collection of the elusive large-format (3.5 inch in diameter) black-and-white player stadium pins featuring members of the Los Angeles Dodgers, issued between 1958 and 1960. Highlighted by Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax and Pee Wee Reese, this collection of eleven different Los Angeles Dodgers pins is the largest collection of its type we have ever handled. Our consignor purchased this collection, which originated from the personal collection of pioneer pinback collector Dr. Paul Muchinsky, when it appeared as Lot #1112 in REA's Spring 2015 auction, realizing $1,920. Our consignor was able to upgrade his Koufax using Dr. Muchinsky's exceptional example. Each of these pins is extremely rare, and many of the players found within this lot are the only example we have ever seen. Most PM10 stadium pins measure a standard 1.75 inches in diameter. These large-format 3.5 inch diameter pins probably cost considerably more, and were made in far lower numbers than the traditional smaller stadium pins, and these factors are no doubt related to their rarity compared to smaller stadium pins.

As noted by Dr. Muchinsky in his book Baseball Pinback Buttons, pinback buttons measuring more than three inches in diameter were simply not commonplace until 1970 or later. This collection consists of the following: Davis, Erskine, Hodges, Howard, Koufax, Larker, Newcombe, Podres, Reese, Sherry, and Williams. The overall condition of these pins is outstanding. The black-and-white player images are crisp and clean, and the surface of each pin has been preserved beautifully, with only very light scratches or surface dents visible under close inspection on a few (mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). The Podres and Koufax pins each display staining along their perimeters. The reverse of each pin is fully intact, with normal light oxidation, which does not in the least detract from the overall Excellent to Mint appearance of this collection. This is a spectacular and extremely significant collection of eleven large-format player stadium pins that would be a significant addition to any world-class pinback or Los Angeles Dodgers collection. Total: 11 pins. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $600
