Circa 1913 Baseball Player Stamps Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $840
Presented is an outstanding example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the fascinating circa 1913 Baseball Player Stamps series. Cobb is ideally pictured in a batting pose set against a baseball diamond and framed by an ornate border on the stamp, which measures approximately 1.75 x 2.5 inches. Not much is known about the purpose of these stamps or their method of issue. A 2013 auction offering of a calendar produced by J. H. Dugan, a company based in Rutland, Vermont, yields perhaps the most concrete clue to date regarding this set. That calendar, spanning June 1914 to May 1915, features the exact same images as the stamps, cataloged in The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards as 1913 Baseball Player Stamps, beautifully lithographed onto individual calendar pages. Further research may one day reveal the precise connection and whether these stamps were perhaps the inspiration for the calendar or vice versa. Regardless of the exact origin, this stamp of Ty Cobb dates from the heart of his legendary career and is the first of its kind that we have ever offered. The stamp presents as Excellent from the front, with bold colors and a crisp image. It would technically grade modestly due to small areas of paper loss on the blank reverse. Encapsulated as Authentic by SGC. This would be a fascinating and rare addition to any advanced Ty Cobb, Hall of Fame, or type-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $840
