1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco "Series 3" Texas League Complete Set Minus One (94/95)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,100
Complete set (minus 1) of ninty-four different 1910 T210 Old Mill "Series 3" cards featuring Texas League players. Missing only Tesreau for completion. The T210 set is actually comprised of eight different series, each a set unto itself, and each representing a different minor league. The "Series 3" cards feature players from the Texas League, including Hank Gowdy and Rogers Hornsby's brother Everett. This subset also includes Morris, of special note to collectors as the only horizontal pose in the entire T210 set of 640 cards. A complete or near-complete series such as this is very rarely offered.
This complete "Series 3" set (minus 1) consists of the following: Alexander, Ash, Bandy, Barkenkemp, Belew, Bell, Bennett, Berlick, Billiard, Blanding, Blue, Burch, Burk, Carlin, Conaway, Corkill, Cowan, Coyle, Crable, Curry, Dale, Davis, Deardorff, Donnelley, Doyle, Drucke, Dugey, Ens, Evans, Fillman, Firestine, Francis, Galloway, Gardner, Gear, Glawe, Gordon, Gowdy, Harbison, Harper, Hicks, Hill, Hinninger, Hirsch, Hise, Hooks, Hornsby, Howell, Johnston, Jolley, Jones, Kaphan, Kipp, Leidy, Malloy, Maloney, McKay, Meagher, Merritt, Mills, Morris, Mullen, Munsell, Nagel, Northen, Ogle, Onslow, Pendleton, Powell, Riley, Robertson, Rose, Salazor, Shindel, Shontz, Slaven, Smith (bat over shoulder), Smith (bat at hip), Spangler, Stadeli, Stinson, Storch, Stringer, Thebo, Tullas, Walsh, Watson, Weber, Weeks, Wertherford, Wickenhofer, Williams, Woodburn, and Yantz. Condition is 22% Vg, 10% Gd, and 78% lesser (almost all of which are due to two pencil-written X's on the reverse of each card; without respect to these marks, the cards range in grade from Pr to Vg, averaging Gd).
The T210 Old Mill Tobacco card set has always been extremely highly regarded by advanced collectors because it features so many players that appear in no other sets, it has a very distinctive design, it is scarce compared to most other tobacco-card sets of the era, and it features striking photos that are unique to the set. The T210 Old Mill set is also well known by all collectors due to its inclusion of Joe Jackson (Series 8) and Casey Stengel (Series 6), which are today regarded as two of the most famous and valuable of all baseball cards. It is virtually impossible to complete the entire set, and only a few complete sets (or even sets minus a few cards) have ever been assembled. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a complete set (minus one) of one of the key series, featuring Texas League players of the Southern League (interesting note: some of these players will be familiar for their appearance in T206). Total: 94 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $5,100
