1958 New York Giants NFL Championship Game Pennant
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $600
Rare New York Giants pennant issued for the 1958 NFL Championship game played between the Giants and Baltimore Colts on December 28th, at Yankee Stadium. The red-felt pennant features a generic illustration of a quarterback in a throwing pose, with "N.Y. Giants" lettered atop its image. The remaining lettering reads "New York Giants - 1958 National Football Championship Yankee Stadium." Because this pennant was issued for a specific event, and was only sold at the stadium during the game, it is one of the rarest of all Giants football pennants. This is the first example we have ever offered and we have only seen seen a few others at auction. The 1958 NFL Championship game, which is still referred to today as "The Greatest Game Ever Played," is notable for being the first to go to "sudden death" overtime. Unfortunately for Giants fans, the game was ultimately decided on Baltimore running back Alan Ameche's one-yard touchdown plunge, which gave the Colts a 23-17 victory. The pennant (26.5 inches) displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including a clipped tip, tack holes, a small loss of fabric to the blue-felt strip along the left border (which originally held the stick), and crazing to the painted graphics. In Good to Very Good condition overall.
