Circa 1910 Baseball Fan with Sixteen Hall of Famers Including Wagner, Cobb, and Mathewson!
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200
This extraordinary circa 1910 baseball fan features portrait images of thirty-five star players, including the following sixteen Hall of Famers: Wagner, Cobb, Mathewson, Johnson, Speaker, Walsh, Evers, Marquard, Baker, Collins, Wallace, Lajoie, Griffith, Chance, Clarke, and Bresnahan. Other stars include Germany Schaffer, Hal Chase, Art Devlin, Nap Rucker, Johnny Kling, Chief Meyers, Dick Hoblitzell, and "Smokey Joe" Wood. All of the players are identified in printed white lettering atop their caps (some of the names are misspelled). This is not only an extremely rare baseball fan (it is only the second example we have ever offered), but one that is notable for the number of players featured. The few other baseball fans from the era that feature player images picture only a small number of players, usually half the number seen here. This one pictures just about every top player from that time period, making it one of the most attractive and desirable examples in the hobby. The copyright notice of "F. A. Schnieder" appears in tiny print along the border. These fans were usually distributed free by local merchants as promotional giveaways. As such, most display advertising on the reverse. We assume this example does as well, but it has not been examined out of frame. The fan, which is complete with its original wooden handle, displays a few small tears along the base, minor edge wear, a tiny blemish on Mathewson's image, and a slight crease in Bresnahan's cap. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. 10 x 14 inches (including the handle). Outstanding for display! Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 21.5 x 24. 5 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,200
