1910 E125 American Caramel Die-cut Christy Mathewson
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,040
Addendum: It has been brought to our attention that the tabs have been taped back into place on the incorrect sides. The card would still meet the requirements for "Authentic" from SGC. This key Hall of Famer from the extremely rare E125 American Caramel series is one of Christy Mathewson’s rarest cards. Circa 1910, the American Caramel Co. issued one large die-cut card per box of caramels. They were designed as "stand-up" cards with fold-back tabs to allow the players to stand on their own. The offered E125 features Mathewson in his New York Giants uniform in an ideal pitching pose. It is entirely clean, presenting as Excellent. The reverse, which features a complete checklist of the New York Giants in the set and advertising for American Caramels, is also perfectly clean, with text centered slightly to the right. Two pieces of vintage tape reinforce the flaps and are responsible for the card being encapsulated as Authentic by SGC. The flaps appear as if they are not detached at all, just reinforced, but we believe they are detached and the tape on the reverse keeps them in place. (In 2004, REA sold a tremendous E125 Mathewson that had the tabs present but separated; we believe this is that very card with the tabs simply reattached by reverse tape reinforcement.) This is an outstanding and extremely striking example of one of the rarest of all Christy Mathewson cards, from one of the most elusive of all caramel-card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
