1910 E104-1 Nadja Caramels Eddie Plank

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,080

Presented is an example of key Hall of Famer Eddie Plank from the extremely rare E104-1 Nadja Caramels series. The offered card features a classic portrait image reminiscent of Plank's T206 White Border card, which also depicts the Philadelphia Athletics star in portrait set against a blue background. E104-1 Nadja Caramels are among the rarest of all twentieth-century caramel issues. Produced to commemorate the Athletics’ 1910 Championship season, the 18-card set features members of the Athletics exclusively. The cards measure 1-1/2 x 2-5/8 inches, which is the standard size for tobacco issues. They are nearly identical to D359 Rochester/Williams Baking, and another related set of legendary rarity, T208 Fireside Tobacco. Graded GOOD 30 by SGC, the offered card is bright and crisp, with a flawless image of Plank and a deep blue background. A little color bleed is visible along the right edge, with even wear to the corners (slightly more to the upper right) and a horizontal crease passing through the card at Plank's shoulders. Blank reverse, with a few small areas of discoloration. This card is the plain portrait variation (each player can also be found with an overprint of a white elephant and the notation “World’s Champions 1910” on front) with blank back (also issued with Nadja ad). This is only the third different E104-1 Plank that we have offered in the last twenty years. Only four examples have been graded higher by SGC. This is a very desirable example of the key Hall of Famer from this extremely rare and distinctive "E" card set featuring members of the World Champion 1910 Philadelphia Athletics. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,080
