1909-1911 T206 White Border Fred Clarke Portrait - Ghost Image on Reverse!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $4,200

Fascinating printing anomaly of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Fred Clarke (portrait) from the classic T206 White Border series. This card possesses a unique and extremely boldly defined ghost image of Clarke on the reverse of the card. It has the appearance that the black print neatly transferred onto the reverse during the printing process at the factory, though we suspect that the true explanation has something to do with excess ink on the printing press remaining on the press during test printing runs. Perhaps this unusual card will provide insight into the T206 printing process. However this occurred, it has clearly created a prominent “shadow" or "ghost image” of Clarke on the reverse that is an identical mirror image of the pose on the front of the card. Also visible under close inspection are the black lines that frame Clarke's image. This is the most boldly defined ghost image that we can ever recall seeing! Encapsulated EX 60 by SGC (submitted by REA), the card is bright and crisp, with bold colors, centering slightly to the top, and strong corners. The Piedmont 150 advertising reverse is bright and clean. The T206 set, affectionately known as "The Monster," is the most popular of all 1910-era sets and is still yielding new and exciting discoveries more than a century after its production. As collectors have become more sophisticated, there has been a growing appreciation for all great rarities and unusual cards associated with this landmark set. This is an unusual printing anomaly that will be very much appreciated by collectors of the various nuances found within this iconic set. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,200
