1900 Bound Cuban Baseball Magazine Collection - El Petit Habana - Including Cuban X Giants Centerfold Team Photo w/ Sol White

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,560

Presented here is a complete bound run of the first twenty-five issues of the weekly Cuban baseball magazine El Petit Habana, spanning the dates April 15, 1900 to September 30, 1900. The first issue was actually titled El Catcher, with the name of the publication changed to El Petit Habana beginning with issue number two (the name change is addressed by the publisher in issue number two). This weekly publication, printed on newspaper stock, is similar in style and content to early American periodicals covering baseball, such as the Sporting News and Sporting Life. Because this publication is specific to baseball and was published weekly, most issues are only eight pages, but what they lack in volume, they more than make up for with their historical and photographic content. Nearly every issue features a photo of a prominent player(s), manager, or team executive(s) on the cover, while the interior pages record box scores and accounts of games played between the top professional teams in Cuba. Some of the issues also briefly cover major league, Negro League, and American college teams/games. Obviously, all of the periodicals are printed in Spanish, which limits our exact knowledge of the information they contain, but for Cuban-baseball collectors/historians, the value of this collection is incalculable, as much of the information can probably be found nowhere else. It should also be noted that this group of periodicals comes with the special provenance of having once resided in the famed Richard Merkin Collection. Cuban baseball publications dating from the turn of the century are seldom seen, making this an extraordinarily rare historical archive.
