Helmar "6-Up" Die-Cut Team-Card Collection (15)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
Collection of fifteen different "6-Up" die-cut team cabinet cards (6 x 4.5 inches) issued by the Helmar Brewing Company. This set began production in 2010 and consists of seventy-seven cards. Fifty-five cards feature big league teams, while the remainder consists of minor league clubs such as Rochester, New York; Portland, Oregon; Oakland, California; and Jersey City, New Jersey. Each card has multiple layers and features oval, die-cut holes for the player portraits. The issue was limited to a maximum production of twenty-five total for any card, and to date completion of this set has proven to be a formidable task (we know of only a few complete sets in collectors' hands). The unique design of each card features portrait illustrations of six team members set against a colorful stadium or city backdrop, with both the team and players identified in print. Included among the players featured in this grouping are Cy Young, Larry "Nap" Lajoie, Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, Willie Keeler, Roger Bresnahan, Vic Willis, Ed Walsh, George Davis and Hugh Duffy. Although a few teams are represented more than once, no two cards are identical because the players pictured are either partially or totally different. Most of the teams are circa 1909-1914 with most being identified by year on the front or back or both. The teams represented here, with the number for each team (if more than one) noted in parentheses, are 1914 Chicago Whales, 1909 Chicago White Sox (2), St. Louis Cardinals (3), 1910 New York Highlanders, 1908 Chicago Cubs (2), 1909 Philadelphia Phillies, 1909 Boston Doves, 1910 Cleveland Indians, 1909 So. Lg. Tenn. Stars, 1909 Virginia. Lg. Stars, and 1911 Portland Pippins. As a point of reference, it should be noted that in sirraffles' most recent individual eBay auctions for the fifteen cards in this collection, the cumulative sale total was in excess of $1,750. It should also be noted that in REA's October 2013 auction a Helmar Die-Cut Team Card Collection of 23 (Lot 969) sold for $3,259. Like all of the Helmar issues, these cards were intentionally produced with a distressed look, with most having rounded corners and rubbed edges. Near Mint condition overall. Total: 15 Die-Cut Team Cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $540
