1949 Leaf Football Collection (17) Including Five Hall of Famers
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080
Presented is a collection of fifteen different (plus two duplicates) 1949 Leaf Football cards, highlighted by Hall of Famers Chuck Bednarik, Bill Dudley, Pete Pihos, Charley Trippi, and Steve Van Buren. Just as the cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf Baseball series are much rarer than Bowman and Topps cards from the late 1940s and early 1950s, Leaf Football cards are also rarer than most other postwar football issues. They are also very distinctive, with an unusual and very colorful design that has always made these a favorite with collectors. Also of note is the fact that, just as there is a rare and a common 49-card series of 1948-1949 Leaf Baseball, 1949 Leaf Football are considerably rarer than 1948 Leaf Football. We have submitted five cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. This collection consists of the following: #16 Trippi (HOF, Ex+), 22 Dudley (HOF, Ex), 28 Pihos (HOF, Vg-Ex+), 31 (miscut, otherwise Ex-Mt), 38 (NM-MT 8), two 39 (Ex+ and Vg-Ex), 43 (Ex-Mt), 56 Lujack (EX 5), 65 (Vg-Ex+), 74 (Ex-Mt), 79 Van Buren (HOF, NM 7), two 81 (Vg-Ex+ and possible slight trim, otherwise Ex-Mt), 90 (Vg-Ex), 110 (EX 5), and 134 Bednarik (HOF, NM 7). All cards are bright, crisp, and clean, with a superb overall appearance. This is an extremely attractive collection of cards, with several notable highlights, from this classic 1940s football set. The total SMR value for just the five graded cards is $695. Total: 17 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,080
