1936 Jesse Owens Signed Baseball - Displays as a Single!
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $240
Official National League (Frick)/International League (Knappe) ball signed by Jesse Owens (1913-1980), legendary track star and Olympic gold-medal winner. Owens' has scripted his name in black fountain pen on a side panel, with the signature grading "2" overall (much of the ink in the first name is no longer visible but the pen impression can be seen by the naked eye). Also featured on this ball, on a separate side panel, is the black fountain-pen signature (grading "5") of famed entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. What makes this ball all the more desirable is that based upon the dual National League/International League stamping, this ball can be dated to 1936, the year Owens made history in the 1936 Olympics. (The National League stamping dates to the 1936-1940 manufacturing period; however, Knappe was only International League president from 1929 to 1936, thereby dating the ball precisely to 1936.) Owens, who was the fastest man alive during the 1930s, is best remembered for his remarkable performance in the 1936 Olympics, held in Berlin, Germany. Owens won four gold medals at the games (100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4x100 meter relay), the most by any athlete, and in doing so helped discredit Hitler's doctrine of Aryan supremacy. The ball displays light scattered age toning and a few minor abrasions. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $240
