Circa 1920 Rube Foster Cabinet Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,700
Original cabinet photo of legendary Negro League Hall of Famer Rube Foster. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it is a "Type 1 Original Photograph." The photo, which displays exceptional clarity and contrast, is printed on fine-mesh linen and bears the photographer's credit, "A. P. Bedou," embossed in the lower right corner. (A. P. Bedou was a well-known New Orleans photographer.) There are a number of vintage pencil notations on the reverse, including one that reads "Spring Training/Andrew 'Rube' Foster/Chicago American Giants/New Orleans." This is one of the most famous photos ever taken of Rube Foster and one that has been reproduced in countless books and other publications. Despite its widespread circulation, originals are exceedingly rare. This is one of only two original examples of this photograph we are aware of, and it could not be any finer with regard to condition. The photo itself (3.75 x 5.75 inches) is in Mint condition. The mount (7 x 10 inches), which includes what appears to be the original string along the top for hanging, displays two small, light stains in the lower right corner and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Interestingly, we are aware of another Foster photograph by Bedou, picturing him in a slightly different pose, that was obviously taken at the very same time and sitting as the offered cabinet photo. This is a remarkable photo in all respects and one of the most important Negro League images we have ever handled. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,700
