Pair of Circa 1870s/1880s Baseball Team CDVs
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $540
Pair of baseball CDV rarities, each picturing an unidentified ball club. 1) The first, dating from circa 1870, pictures nine players posing together in a formal studio setting, with two players each holding a bat, and another player, presumably the team's pitcher, holding a ball. It appears that the uniforms are a bib-front design, with two clearly displaying an "S" on the front. It is interesting to note that a young boy has "crashed" the photo by peeking over a wall in the background. The only clue we have regarding the identity of this club is the photographer's credit stamp on the reverse that reads "J. Bonney Photographer/Cor. Michigan and Washington Streets/South Bend, Ind." 4 x 2.5 inches. Ex. 2) The second photo pictures a club posing together in an outdoor setting. Various pieces of equipment are displayed, including bats, balls, and both a catcher's mask and catcher's chest protector. Two of the players are wearing bib-front jerseys that are lettered "NW" on the front. The remaining players are in various manners of dress. There is a vintage team identification written in blue ink along the thin, white top border, but most of it is illegible. No photographer's credit is present. 4 x 2.5 inches. Ex. Total: 2 CDVs. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $540
