Circa 2000 Mickey Mantle Bronze Figurine (Small Version of Nine-Foot Bronze at Mickey Mantle Field in Commerce)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,560
This bronze figurine of Mickey Mantle was created by artist Nick Calcagno and is a smaller version of an enormous nine-foot bronze statue of Mickey Mantle that sits outside of Mickey Mantle Field in Mantle's hometown of Commerce, Oklahoma. The ten-inch-high bronze figure pictures Mantle in the follow-through of his right-handed batting swing and rests upon a bronze platform bearing the signature of the artist. The platform, in turn, sits upon a 1.75-inch wooden base. While not known for certain, we were told that a number of these Mantle bronzes were sold as part of a fundraising effort to pay for the nine-foot Mantle statue that was dedicated on 10/5/2010. This is not only the first example we have ever offered of this particular figurine, but the first we can recall having seen. Like all of the other bronze figurines offered in this auction, this particular piece was obtained directly from a former owner of Southland Art Castings, who had it displayed in his personal collection for many years. The wooden base displays a few minor nicks; otherwise the piece is in Mint condition. Height: 12 inches. Base: 9.5 x 3.5 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,560
