1994 Ty Cobb Bronze Figurine by Palmer Murphy - "1/1"

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,000

Detailed bronze figurine of Ty Cobb by renowned artist Palmer Murphy. The five-inch figurine depicts Cobb in a batting stance and rests on a three-quarter inch bronze platform that has Cobb's full name ("Tyrus Raymond Cobb") scripted along the front. One side of the platform bears the year "1915," while the other features a facsimile signature of Cobb. The reverse of the platform displays Murphy's signature and a 1994 copyright. The platform sits upon a one-inch-high marble base. This unique piece was created by Murphy as the companion to a similar-sized Babe Ruth bronze he made that featured Ruth, as a member of the Red Sox, in a pitching pose. Murphy has confirmed that this is the only bronze he made of this Cobb piece, therefore distinguishing it as a "1/1." (As a side note, the companion Ruth piece was later presented to Yankees pitcher David Wells in 1998.) Murphy is best known for his bronze statues, and his work has been displayed at both the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and at the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore. Like all of the other bronze figurines offered in this auction, this particular piece was obtained directly from a former owner of Southland Art Castings, who had it displayed in his personal collection for many years. This is an exceptional high-quality work of art which could be displayed proudly in many settings and different types of collections. Near Mint condition. Height: 6.75 inches. Base: 5.75 x 2.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,000
