1908 PC760 Rose Company Postcard George Stone - "Greenfield's Delatour Chocolates" Advertising Back

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080

Graded EX+ 70 by SGC (submitted by REA). Presented is an extraordinary advertising postcard sample: a rare PC760 Rose Postcard with advertising overprint on the reverse for Greenfield's Delatour Chocolates, manufactured by E. Greenfield's Sons of New York. This is the ONLY PC760 of Stone (with or without overprint) graded at this level with just one higher! "Overprinting" is a term commonly used to refer to the rare practice of a company taking cards already printed and adding advertising, in the form of printing or ink stamp, to allow the cards to function as an advertising vehicle at a relatively modest cost compared to creating and printing a new set. In this case, the overprint on this Rose Postcard of Stone from St. Louis is beautifully and very elaborately printed, and advertises "The most delicious Chocolate Candies made. Greenfield’s Delatour Chocolates. Nearly 100 kinds. One of them Delatour Butterscotch Chocolates. Sounds good. Tastes better. A liberal introductory sample sent post-paid for ten cents. For Sale Everywhere. E. Greenfield’s Sons & Co. Makers of Chocolate Sponge. 44 Barclay St., New York. Established 1848." The Rose Postcard Company obviously offered this style of elaborate advertising overprinting as a special service to advertisers. A Greenfield's Chocolates advertising Rose Postcard is a virtually impossible-to-find sample; we have offered only four others over the last fifteen years (not including the two examples offered in this auction). The advertising overprint on the offered example is boldly printed in brown ink. There is light wear to the corners, the surface is flawless, and the image is crisp. The reverse is clean, and it has not been postally used. Rose Postcards are rare enough, but this is an extremely attractive all-the-rarer example with very desirable overprinting worthy of even the most advanced collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,080
