Two Circa 1998 Southland Art Castings Joe Jackson Bronze Figurines - Prototype and Regular Issue

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $600

This collection of two rare Joe Jackson bronze figurines, issued by Southland Art Castings, circa 1998, is comprised of a unique prototype and an example of the standard issue. Each of the 8.5-inch bronze figures are practically identical in form, but the prototype displays the "Sox" logo on the left breast of the jersey and an "S" on the front of the cap, whereas the other does not. Like all of the other bronze figures from the baseball-player series, the standard-issue figurine sits on a two-inch-high wood base bearing a metal plaque with Jackson's name engraved upon it. The prototype sits up on a one-inch-high wood base. The Joe Jackson bronze figurine was limited in production to only 200, and the standard-issue example offered here features a Southland label on the underside of the base that lists its limitation number: "51/200." Despite the limitation number of 200, we have recently learned that these bronze figurines were produced by order only (i. e., the company did not produce 200 statues and then ship them out as orders came in; when an order came in, the company notified the foundry to produce a bronze). Also, when ordering, a customer could request the number he wanted (i. e., "1/200," "25/200," etc., if it had not already been issued). Therefore, if a statue is found bearing the number "80/200" it does not necessarily mean that that particular statue was the eightieth one produced. Given that information, and the fact that that this only the second standard-issue Southland Joe Jackson bronze figurine we have ever seen, it is highly likely that far fewer than 200 were actually produced for each player. Our consignor obtained both of these figurines directly from a former owner of Southland Art Castings, who had them displayed in his personal collection for many years. Both wood bases display light-to-moderate wear, including a few minor abrasions. Each bronze figurine is in Mint condition. Height: 10 inches. Standard-issue oval base: 6 x 4.5 inches. Prototype oval base: 6.5 x 4.75 inches. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $600
