1950 Bobo Newsom Chattanooga Lookouts Game-Used Home Uniform (Jersey and Pants)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $960

Chattanooga Lookouts home uniform, consisting of the jersey and matching pants, worn by pitcher Bobo Newsom in 1950. The white flannel jersey is lettered "Lookouts" on the front and features the number "31" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in red on navy felt, with both done in a "drop-shadow" style that creates a "3-D" effect. A Southern Association "50th Anniversary 1901-1950" patch appears on the left sleeve. Located in the collar are a "Rawlings" label, a "50" size tag, and a laundry tag. The name "B. Newsom" is chain-stitched in navy on the left front tail. The matching white flannel pants, with a single red stripe running down each leg, feature the name "B. Newsome" chain-stitched in red upon a white strip tag located in the waistband. Directly below the name tag are a "Rawlings" label, a "42" size tag, and a laundry tag. Both garments are original as issued, with no alterations, and display moderate wear, including a few light stains on the shoulders of the jersey. This jersey has a unique and ideal provenance. It was sold many years ago directly by the Newsom family to an author who was working on a biography of Newsom. A few years later, the author sold the uniform, as well as a copy of his unfinished biography of Newsom, to artist and legendary collector Richard Merkin. From Merkin, the uniform finally ended up in the hands of our consignor, noted collector and universally respected jersey expert Phil Wood, who has provided a letter of authenticity for the uniform. The copy of the unfinished biography of Newsom accompanies the uniform!
