1905 PC782 Rotograph Postcard Joseph McGinnity

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,320

Extremely rare PC782 Rotograph real-photo postcard of New York Giants Hall of Famer Joe McGinnity. Designated PC782 in the American Card Catalog, the Rotograph postcard set is unusual and distinctive, and features New York players (either Giants or Highlanders). The Standard Catalog lists eight different players confirmed in the set but notes that the checklist may not be complete. Each postcard (3.25 x 5.25 inches) pictures the player in uniform posed in a formal studio setting. The player's name and team affiliation are printed along the base, as is the notation "Rotograph Series." The printing on the reverse further credits Rotograph, "The Rotograph Co., N.Y. City." Do not be fooled by the modest grade of GOOD 30 assigned by SGC! The offered postcard of McGinnity (identified as "Josep" on the front) is in extremely strong condition with a striking, crisp image, a flawless surface, and four strong corners (a bit more wear in the lower left). The reverse has not been used postally and bears no correspondence. A tiny ".75" is marked in pencil at the top edge, almost certainly as a pricing reference, which was extremely common in the old days at shows. SGC has graded a total of only twenty-three examples (of any subject) from this scarce postcard series, and this is only the second PC782 McGinnity we have ever had the privilege of offering (the first, graded EX/NM 80, appeared as Lot #215 in REA's Spring 2014 auction, realizing $4,444). This is a stunning real-photo postcard, ideally featuring Hall of Famer Joe McGinnity, from the PC782 Rotograph series and would be a significant addition to any Hall of Fame, postcard, or sample-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,320
