1905 Souvenir Postcard Shop of Cleveland Nap Lajoie

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $4,800

Stunning real-photo postcard of Hall of Famer Nap Lajoie from the 1905 Souvenir Post Card Shop of Cleveland series. This postcard features a flawless portrait of Lajoie on the front, the exact same photo used to produce his classic T206 White Border portrait card several years later. His name and the manufacturer's credit are neatly printed underneath the image, just above an approximately one-inch blank space designed for a short message. The offered example reads "Seven to nothing in favor of Cleveland - even with Larry gone and Moore pitching. Very good - yes?" in this space. The postcard is postmarked July 11, 1905 on the reverse, and a check of that date shows the Naps defeated the Philadelphia Athletics at home by the exact score referenced en route to a fifth-place finish in the American League that season. Encapsulated as POOR 10 by SGC due to the writing on front as well as the postal use and address on the otherwise clean reverse. The postcard is otherwise in Very Good condition due to a small crease to the right of Lajoie's head. It has an overall Excellent or better display value despite this flaw. In our opinion, handwritten messages -- especially those with great baseball content as is the case here -- add exceptional character to vintage postcards and make them more desirable pieces tied to the history of the game. This is an exceptional postcard worthy of any Nap Lajoie, postcard, or prewar-card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $4,800
