1915 D303 General Baking Co. Tris Speaker

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC (submitted by REA). Modestly graded example of Tris Speaker from the D303 General Baking issue. Issued in 1915 by the General Baking Company, this series shares designs with several closely related caramel issues (E90-1 American Caramel Company, E106 American Caramel, T216 Kotton, etc.) from the same era. All General Baking cards are rare, but an example of Hall of Famer Tris Speaker is naturally all the more noteworthy and desirable. This important card of Speaker is one of the key cards to the set, and the design is also considered by many to be one of the most visually appealing cards of Speaker ever produced. A full-length, ready-to-bat pose of the Boston Red Sox outfielder is set against a colorful landscape which includes a majestic multicolored sky. The offered example presents with vibrant colors, a crisp image, centering to the left, and light wear to the corners. Vertical toning is present on the front, while the reverse is clean and features a flawless advertisement for General Baking and its products. A small area of paper loss is present near the left edge, and a few creases are visible. A total of only eight D303 General Baking Speakers have ever been graded according to the combined population reports of PSA and SGC. Despite its modest grade, this very attractive example of Tris Speaker from this rare prewar food issue would be a key addition to any rare Hall of Famer, D303 General Baking, or Tris Speaker collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,440
