1887 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Jay Faatz SGC EX 60 - Rare Black Mount!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,400

Graded EX 60 by SGC (submitted by REA). Superb 1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Jay Faatz (#150-3 pose) of the Cleveland Spiders. All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example in that it has an extremely rare black mount. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, "The vast majority of cabinet mounts are yellow in color. However, cabinets have also been found with brown, black, pink, and (in a few rare cases) red mounts." The image on this card is extremely bold, with extraordinary contrast and tremendous detail. Very bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back. This is only the fourth black-mount N173 that we can recall offering in the last two decades! This is an extremely attractive, exceedingly rare N173 black-mount example, and an ideal sample of this significant nineteenth-century rarity from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,400
