1887 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Fred Carroll SGC EX/NM 80 - Rare Brown Mount!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,800

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC (submitted by REA). Superb 1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Fred Carroll (#69-1 pose) of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example in that it has an extremely rare brown mount. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, "The vast majority of cabinet mounts are yellow in color. However, cabinets have also been found with brown, black, pink, and (in a few rare cases) red mounts." The image on this card is extremely bold, with extraordinary contrast and tremendous detail (you can virtually count the blades of grass at his feet). Very bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back. This is only the second brown-mount N173 that we can recall offering in the last two decades! (The first, graded EX 60 by SGC, appeared as lot #20 in REA's Fall 2014 auction, realizing $4,800.) This is an extremely attractive, exceedingly rare N173 brown-mount example, and an ideal sample of this significant nineteenth-century rarity from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,800
