1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet New York Mascot SGC NM 84
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,400
Graded NM 84 by SGC (submitted by REA). Presented is a tremendous N173 Old Judge cabinet card featuring Willie Breslin, the young mascot of the New York Giants. This is the ONLY example ever graded by SGC (at any level). The youngster who is pictured on this card is well known among collectors for his appearance with Buck Ewing in both the large and small Old Judge sets, but few realize that he was also popular enough to warrant his own card. It is safe to say that not too many collectors went to the trouble of special ordering his N173 cabinet card by mail direct from Goodwin, especially when the "competition" included stars such as Anson and Kelly and Brouthers, but fortunately a few dedicated fans did just that. The offered example is one of only two or three examples we have ever seen of this extremely unusual nineteenth-century baseball card. We can only imagine that Goodwin was amused when the order, and presumably a few additional orders, came in for this card of the New York mascot as opposed to one of the many great stars of the day. The youngster is dressed in a miniature New York Giants uniform, true to form in every detail to those worn by the players, and is holding a baseball. He is identified on the card simply as the "N.Y. Mascot." Bright and clean, both front and back, with flawless contrast, and with the gold trim of the edges completely intact. This is an incredible surviving specimen of one of the most unusual and memorable of all nineteenth-century cards from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $8,400
