1887 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Kid Madden SGC EX/NM 80 - Extremely Rare Red Mount!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,600

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! Superb 1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Kid Madden (#288-6 pose) of the Boston Beaneaters. All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example in that it has an extremely rare red mount. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, "The vast majority of cabinet mounts are yellow in color. However, cabinets have also been found with brown, black, pink, and (in a few rare cases) red mounts." During the past forty years, we have only had the opportunity to offer a single N173 with a red mount, which appeared as lot #19 in REA's Fall 2014 auction (realizing $5,700). That example suffered bleeding of the red color and was in lesser condition than the card offered here, which is absolutely stunning in every possible way. It is bright, crisp, and clean, with flawless image contrast, a perfect surface, light touches of wear to the corners, and outstanding centering. The offered card is a tremendous rarity and of great note to Old Judge scholars and collectors. While condition would be a secondary concern given the importance of the mount color, we cannot help but remark that this cabinet falls into the top ten percent of all examples ever graded! This is an extraordinary rarity of legendary proportions from the N173 set, one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $9,600
