1961 Roger Maris Safe at Home Signed Movie Contract

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,700

Thirteen-page movie contract for the film Safe at Home, dated November 10, 1961, signed in blue ink by Roger Maris (grading "9/10") and the two producers of the film: Mitchell Hamilburg (brown ink, "10") and Tom Naud (black ink, "9"). (Although the film is not specifically mentioned by name in the contract, Hamilburg and Naud were the producers of the 1962 film Safe at Home, which also featured Mickey Mantle). The contract calls for Maris to render to the producers his services for a period of three weeks, for which he will receive a salary of $25,000, plus 12.5% of the film's net profits. As noted by the date of this contract, the producers wasted no time in trying to capitalize on the fame of both Maris and Mantle after their historic 1961 home-run duel, which culminated in Maris breaking Ruth's long-standing single-season home-run record in the final game of the year. Released on April 13, 1962, Safe at Home did not win any Academy Awards, nor was it a "home run" with the critics. But it did give Mantle and Maris an opportunity to shine on the big screen, which was a source of great amusement to both for the rest of their lives. While movie posters and related items from Safe at Home are plentiful, this is the first contractual item we have ever seen, making it a rare souvenir from Maris' brief cinematic career. All of the pages of the contract (8.12 x 13 inches) which is typed on onionskin, display folds along the top and bottom border, as well as staple holes along the top; otherwise it remains in Excellent condition. The contract is accompanied by a five-page copy (8.5 x 11 inches; Ex) of "Exhibt A," which is the "Definition of 'Net Profits'." Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $2,700
